I hate marketing. In fact, I absolutely loathe it. As I am learning, it is a necessary evil if you want to survive in the world of publishing. It doesn't matter if you have a publisher or you are self publishing either. You have to market.
Broke writers are poor marketers. Unfortunately, it isn't the best writing that succeeds. It is the writing that is marketed best. If you're satisfied with earning somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,500 to $4,000 a year, which is what the average writer makes, then this article probably isn't for you. If you're a hobbyist writer, this article isn't for you. You can still maintain your integrity as a writer, make money and share your literary message with the world.
There are three steps I have learned to use to help me make more money. It takes time. You do not earn money overnight. If you follow these tips, and you work them consistently, you will make money from your writing.
1. Create effective marketing campaigns.
Before you launch your book, you want to plan your marketing campaign. With the Internet, it is so much easier to market your work because you can use automation and market from the comfort of home.
Writing articles, creating social campaigns, filming videos and commenting on blogs are just some of the many ways you have to market your writing, and it's free to do. It does take some time. There are submission tools to help you with getting your content distributed, and if you recycle your content into different formats, then you can distribute to other sites besides article directories. Examples of these sites are Slideshare and YouTube (documents and videos respectively).
2. Build a following for your writing.
List building is a crucial element of your marketing campaign. It allows you to recycle your traffic and connect with your readers. Unfortunately, only about two percent of visitors will return to your website, so if you don't have a mechanism to collect email addresses and build a relationship with your readers, then you will be losing that chance to connect with readers.
Once you build a list, it allows you to send out an email to your readers each time you release a book or story. With a loyal following, you sell more books almost instantly. An autoresponder allows you to automate this process.
3. Build a writer's platform.
A writer's platform gives your readers a place for them to connect with you. One of the best ways to do this is through a blog or website. A blog allows you to write about your writing process, tell your readers more about your books, characters, plots and other elements of your story and give them an inside view into your writing. It allows them to get to know you better, and the better your readers know you, the better chance you have of connecting with them and selling them your writing. Without readers why write?
It is possible to make a lot of money writing literary fiction. To do that you must have a solid marketing plan. Do these three things and do them consistently, and you will see more sales for your writing.
